The Famous Model 1860 Light Cavalry Sabre also had the name of M1862 taken from when the initial 800 were issued saw service with the US cavalry during the American Civil War. It remained in service up to the end of the Indian wars.
This cavalry sabre got its name so it could be differentiated from the larger & weightier Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Sabre that it followed. In common with the sabre it replaced it featured a guard fashioned from brass, the grip was wrapped in leather & the scabbard was made of steel but unlike the sabre it replaced it wasn’t as large & so was easier to fight with.
The Sabre is now being used by certain U.S. Army Cavalry units in Colour Guards, & are used as parting gifts.
The item comes with a dull edge which can be sharpened at a cost of £30-
