In medieval weaponry, the breastplate is the front portion of plate armour covering the trunk of the body. It has been a military mainstay since ancient times and was usually made of leather, bronze or iron in antiquity. The breastplate was fastened to the body through leather belts that cross themselves on the back.
This handcrafted steel and brass Castilla & Leon Breastplate by Marto of Toledo, is a one piece solid construction of armour that covers the entire front of the torso.
This type of breastplate was typical of the Spanish armoury in the 16th century and was mainly worn by foot soldiers.
This steel armour is enhanced by riveted brass plates surrounding an oval relief emblem in the centre of the breastplate. The relief emblem is that of the coat-of-arms for the Castilla & Leon region of Spain and is accompanied by two fleur de lis, one on either side.
This item will give a beautiful contrasting designed and authentic touch of history to any costume or display.
