The Tuck sword was used as a backup weapon by pikemen and musketeers during the English Civil War. Short, strong and easy to use the tuck allowed for those with more specialised training to quickly and effectively learn the use of swords. Tucks were not always the best quality weapons and required the users to break ranks to use them, but they were useful in certain circumstances and were an important stage in the development of swords.
