The Blackthorn bush is found throughout Ireland and the British Isles. It has been prized for centuries as a material for premium walking sticks. The original Blackthorn sticks were 2 to 4 foot long Irish shillelaghs (the national weapon of rural Ireland). In expert hands the shillelagh was so fearsome that during the final occupation of Ireland, the English outlawed it. To get around the law, the Irish turned the shillelagh into a 3-foot walking stick. The English didn’t want to appear unreasonable by outlawing walking sticks too, so the Irish kept their modified shillelaghs and the world gained a beautiful and functional walking stick known simply as the Blackthorn.
Cold Steel made the effort to obtain and sell authentic Blackthorn sticks over fifteen years ago, but the venture turned out to be disappointing, and not because the sticks didn’t sell well. It was because Blackthorn is difficult to come by and, since it’s grown and not manufactured, it is somewhat inconsistent in quality.
Cold Steel's recent forays into injected molded polypropylene products has yielded some impressive results and now we have produced a new polypropylene Blackthorn that has all of the advantages of real Blackthorn and none of its pitfalls.
Our Irish Blackthorn Walking Stick is inspired by an authentic Blackthorn from Cold Steel President, Lynn C. Thompson's private collection. It was copied carefully, and then artfully modified to a point where it not only mimics nature, but actually rivals and supersedes anything the natural world could produce! If nature had fashioned the most perfect Blackthorn stick, and you were lucky enough to come by it, our Irish Blackthorn Walking Stick is what it would look like. It's a superb faux Blackthorn stick, and since it's injection molded from polypropylene, it will never warp, crack, swell up, or splinter and is easy to maintain with a little soap and water.
Price QualityMatt HAs a walking stick with offensive qualities it is certainly good. I expected greater weighting on the top knob. I like it but it is quite plastic-y feeling. I'm surprised they didn't use a smooth finish on the mould tool to mimic polished wood better. Then it would be 5*. But I still like it and it will be my hiking stick from here on in.
Price QualityTomoI had recently needed to use a walking stick and was using a traditional wooden stick but this became splintered so was searching for something with the strength and durability and also easy to maintain and I found this it answers everything I needed I added a walking stick stopper to the end which now gives more grip I use it all the time and brilliant for wen I take my dogs out I can now walk further and with a lot more ease it is light but strong looking at more cold steel walking sticks as very happy with it from order time to delivery was very fast and I will definitely be using southern swords again top marks on service and delivery and a brilliant stick for those interested I would highly recommend
Price QualityCliveI have had this a few days now and initially thought the top was rather large for my handhold, but now it just seems to fall to hand no problem at all although I found it a little too long I have taken probably just over an inch off the bottom ( the rubber foot I got for the stick just touches the first what looks like where a shoot of branch would come out of the stick ) and that has for me totally transformed the ease of use with it.
I have the walkabout walking stick and loved that but this for me is now my number one to go to every time.
If I had anything at all that I wasn't sure about it would only be the simulation wood on the handle which looks like it is not part of the stick itself but that is only a minor point for me and I just love the thing.
Price QualityAlecits taken me some time to grow on it. At first the second i saw it i admit it seemed disappointing. but now its been a week and ive used it pretty much everyday i can see its fabulous. its the perfect length for a walking stick. (6'4" tall person) its nice and hefty that it feels like a warclub, and its completely functional.

Price QualityCHRISAnother good product from Coldsteel / Southern Swords. Mine was purchased for display only and is great for that BUT if buyer wants a proper walking stick it is somewhat bulky and seems heavy as well as being too long (no information anywhere about cutting it down but as solid material could presumably be done.)
Very pleased, as always good, prompt service.
