Richard the Lionheart (1157 – 1199) was King of England from 1189-1199. He was famed as a great warrior and military leader. By the age of 16 he was commanding his own army to defend his father against rebellion and was revered as a great Christian hero for his activities during the Third Crusade. He one of the only monarchs to be perpetually remembered by his nickname rather than his official title despite speaking little English and spending very little time in his kingdom.
