Details

The Visored Medieval Great helmet – sometimes called a Pot helm or Barrel helm – was a common form of head protection in widespread use from the early 13th to 15th century. The Crusades led to a fundemental change in fighting tactics and style, and the use of heavy lances made it absolutely necessary for knights to completely cover their heads. These cylinder-shaped helmets, which typically had narrow eye slits, were often used as second helmets on top of bascinets or mail coifs. They made it almost impossible for swords or lances to wound the knights wearing them. Their pointed, conical shape also caused sword cuts to slide down and away from the helmet to absorb more of the shock of the blow.

This Visored Helmet is hand forged of 16 gauge carbon steel and consists of a hinged front visor and heavy duty securing latch. The eye slits and nose guard are reinforced with brass strips. Air holes at the front provide ventilation and a supply of fresh air. At an approximate weight of 2.75kg and with a thickly padded internal liner this makes an ideal piece for re-enactment.

We also have a helmet stand for this item as pictured which is usually £19- but if purchased with the helmet is only £15-
