Leading his legions across the Rubicon, Caesar began a civil war in 49 BC from which he became the master of the Roman world. Rome was transformed from a republic into a government with a single ruler, thus Caesar was its first dictator. Julius Caesar was a mathematician, an architect, and one of the ancient's world great orators. Caesar was ambitious and enjoyed the great power placed in his hands.
