By the 12th century the swords of Western Europe had evolved into cruciform hilted weapons with circular wheel shaped pommels, and long double edged blades- often with a fuller or blood groove running down the centre. These were the weapons carried by the Christians knights in the crusades and represented through the cross shaped hilt the Christian faith and high ideals that a chivalric knight was aspiring to uphold.

Although the elegance, simplicity and shear beauty of these swords cannot be denied they were essentially combat weapons and when used from the back of a horse had devastating cutting power. Many knightly swords have been recovered from tombs and some of these weapons have survived through the centuries in spectacular condition.
