Due to the rapier was almost useless as a military weapon, the variant known as a sword rapier was developed. With the preferred method of parry to the outside, guards were made to cover the hand only on that side. This also allowed the sword to lie closer to the body, making it easier to carry and draw.

Named after the battle in 1638 where Rheinfelden was besieged by the German Protestant forces, but the Imperialist Bavarian forces attacked as the Germans were crossing a river and caught them by surprise. The Duke of Saxe-Wiemar however, was able to disengage and march downriver, cross back over, and attack the Imperialist army from the rear and rout them. This type of sword was carried by many of the men on either side of the battle.

The blade of this functional sword is high carbon steel. Includes scabbard.
